Winter Wonderland Week ❄️

Hi families,

The frost finally won this week. The kids arrived Monday with red noses and very strong opinions about whether the puddle by the bike rack had "officially" turned to ice (verdict: it had, and we may have spent four recess minutes investigating with the toe of one boot). Inside, Room 7 has gone full winter — paper snowflakes in every window, a fogged-up reading nook, and a class that gasps a little every time the flurries start up again outside.

This was our Winter Wonderland Week — a little science, a trip around the world to see how different families light up the dark months, and a whole lot of cozy. Here's what we got up to, plus the few things you'll need before we all scatter for the break. ❄️

• Science — the secret life of snowflakes. We learned that every snowflake has six sides (always six!) and grew our own borax crystals on pipe cleaners overnight. The kids could not believe they'd made something sparkly out of a jar of hot water and powder. At home: next time it's frosty, send them out to really look at the patterns on a car window — ask them how many sides they count.
• Holidays around the world. We took a trip through Diwali lamps, Hanukkah candles, Las Posadas lanterns, the Kwanzaa kinara, and Lunar New Year red envelopes — and found the thread running through all of them: in the darkest, coldest part of the year, people everywhere choose to make light. At home: we'd love it if your family shared one winter tradition of your own — a food, a song, a way you mark the season. Even a sentence on a sticky note makes a child stand ten feet tall.
• Read-aloud — Owl Moon by Jane Yolen. We read it with the lights low, and you could have heard a pin drop during the whole hushed walk through the snowy woods. It sparked the best conversation about being quiet and patient outdoors. At home: ask your reader what "the kind of quiet you can hold" means — they'll know.

• Mon, Dec 14 — "Light the Season" sticky notes due. If your family wants to share a winter tradition for our wall, send it in any form (note, photo, drawing). Totally optional, always welcome.
• Thu, Dec 17 — wear red OR blue. We're making a class "warm vs. cool colors" snowscape, so dress in either and we'll sort it out (literally) in art.
• Fri, Dec 18 — Sing-Along & Pajama Day, then early dismissal at 11:45. Please double-check your pickup plan for the short day.
• The great mitten amnesty. Our lost-and-found has become a small mountain of single gloves, three water bottles, and one very nice scarf. Please do a sweep before Friday — anything left at break heads to donation. Labeling winter gear with a name = future-you's best friend. 🧤
• No homework over break — that's an order. The only assignment is rest: sleep in, read something cozy under a blanket, and play outside if the weather's kind. The Reading Bingo below is there if you want it, never as a have-to.

That's a wrap on our coziest week of the year. Thank you for the mittens, the volunteer hours, and the patience on the early-dark mornings — Room 7 runs on it.
